- "The liquor isn't for my family. It's for Haymitch, who acted as mentor for Peeta and me in the Games. He's surly, violent, and drunk most of the time. But he did his job — more than his job—because for the first time in history, two tributes were allowed to win."
- —Katniss Everdeen's thoughts on her mentor[src]
Haymitch Abernathy was a surly, wise-cracking drunkard and victor of the 50th Hunger Games or "Second Quarter Quell". Prior to the 74th Hunger Games, in which he successfully mentored tributes Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark to victory, helping two tributes win the games for the first time in history, Haymitch was one of two victors from District 12 and the only one still alive. Following the announcement of the 75th Hunger Games and the subsequent destruction of the arena thanks to Katniss, Haymitch relocated to District 13 where he became a leading figure in the Mockingjay Rebellion.
